Spain secured their spot in the Euro 2024 last 16 with a scintillating performance against defending champions Italy in Gelsenkirchen.

Despite creating numerous chances and dominating the match, Spain narrowly won due to an own goal by Riccardo Calafiori in the second half. Alvaro Morata’s flick-on was inadvertently knocked in by Calafiori’s knee after nearly an hour of impressive saves by Italy’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy, although participating in an engaging match, couldn’t respond and were clearly second best. Expectations were high with these two European giants meeting in the group stage, and the game delivered, especially in an electric opening half.

Spain showcased beautiful ball movement with intensity and creativity, while Italy, largely thanks to Donnarumma, managed to keep them out for a while. Donnarumma made three excellent saves, including a Pedri header in the first two minutes, and later denying Fabian Ruiz and Morata.

Nico Williams of Spain had two near-misses, heading wide and striking the crossbar, but impressed alongside 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, who narrowly missed a curling effort.

Italy had minimal offensive impact, with just three touches in the opposition box in the first half and no shots on target. They didn’t improve much after the break. Spain, on the other hand, continued to create chances, with Pedri and Morata coming close again.

Spain cruised into the last 16 with two wins from two matches and no goals conceded. Italy still have a chance to progress, needing a win against Croatia on Monday, while Spain will face Albania.
